Antique French Grain Basket – Auvergne, circa 1900
Impressive large antique grain basket originating from the Auvergne region of France and dating from around 1900.
The basket is traditionally handcrafted from straw and bramble, using tightly bundled straw bound together with strips of bramble. This old rural basket-making technique creates the characteristic strong, textured construction visible throughout the piece.
Originally used for the storage of grain, the basket has a generous rounded form and retains its original fitted woven lid. Its exceptionally large dimensions make it a particularly striking example.
More than a century of age and use has given the natural materials a beautiful warm patina, with variations in colour and texture that emphasise its handmade character.
The basket remains in good antique condition, with visible age-related wear and some localised losses and imperfections to the weaving, as shown in the photographs. These are consistent with its age and original utilitarian use.
A beautiful and authentic piece of French rural history, equally impressive today as a large decorative object or characterful storage basket.
