Antique French Shop Shelving Open Bookcase by Chalmette, 1930s
Large antique French open shelving unit, originally used as shop furniture, originating from a clothing store in Vichy, France. The piece dates from the 1930s and is constructed entirely from solid pine wood.
The shelving unit was manufactured by Chalmette, a French furniture maker based in Issoire (Puy-de-Dôme). During the early 20th century, Chalmette produced functional furniture and shop fittings for commercial and professional use. Their work is characterized by solid construction, practical proportions, and restrained detailing, prioritizing durability and usability over decoration.
This example features a tall, architectural structure with a central vertical support, fixed shelves, a molded cornice at the top, and a plinth base. The relatively shallow depth is typical of shop shelving from this period, allowing for efficient presentation while maintaining a limited footprint. The wide compartments reflect its original use for folded garments and retail display.
The surfaces show visible wear, marks, and patina consistent with age and prolonged commercial use, contributing to the authentic character of the piece.
