Modular French Oak Secretary Cabinet with Vitrine, 1950s

A French modular secretary cabinet dating from the 1950s, manufactured by Bibliothèque MD (Martin Dupuis).

The cabinet has a solid oak frame. The recessed panels are made from furniture board, a construction method commonly used in French furniture of the period to provide stability while reducing weight. It consists of four stackable modules. It includes a glazed display compartment, a secretary section with a fold-down writing surface, an enclosed storage compartment and a drawer. Behind the writing flap are several compartments and shelves for organising documents and stationery. The secretary flap is fitted with its original support arms and lock.

The modular construction allows the cabinet to be assembled and transported in separate sections while retaining a stable overall structure.

Suitable for use as a bookcase, display cabinet, writing desk or storage cabinet in a living room, study or home office.

The cabinet is in very good vintage condition. It shows light age-related wear, including minor surface marks and small signs of use consistent with its age. The construction is solid and stable, and all doors, the writing flap and the drawer function properly.

As with many antique and vintage wooden pieces, there may be old, inactive woodworm holes from the past. Where necessary, the furniture has been checked and treated as a precaution.
