Set of 4 Fischel Bentwood Bistro Chairs, Czechoslovakia, circa 1930–1950

Set of four Fischel bentwood bistro chairs, made in Czechoslovakia and dating from circa 1930–1950.

The chairs are made from beechwood using the bentwood technique for which Fischel was known. Each chair has a round wooden seat and a tall curved backrest with four slender turned spindles. Curved supports connect the seat and back, while a circular bentwood stretcher strengthens the legs.

The chairs were acquired as Fischel chairs. Traces on the wood indicate where paper labels were once attached, although the labels themselves are no longer present. The design and construction are consistent with Fischel bentwood furniture from this period.

The beechwood has developed a warm colour and natural patina over the years. There are differences in tone between the chairs, together with scratches, marks and surface wear from age and use.

A classic set of Central European bentwood chairs, originally produced as practical café and bistro seating and suitable for use around a kitchen or dining table.
