Antique French Farmhouse Table, Single-Piece Chestnut Top, Oak Base, Late 18th Century, c. 1780–1800

An exceptional French farmhouse table dating from the late 18th century, circa 1780–1800.

The table stands on a solid oak base and is topped with a remarkable single-piece chestnut plank. The chestnut has developed a deep patina over more than two centuries and displays the rich grain, natural movement and character for which old chestnut is valued.

The table retains its two original drawers: a large drawer at one end and a smaller drawer on one of the long sides. Traditional mortise and tenon construction with wooden pegs reflects the craftsmanship of the period.

With its generous proportions, this table comfortably seats eight to ten people and is equally suitable as a farmhouse dining table, kitchen table or large worktable.

The table remains in good antique condition with normal age-related wear, old shrinkage cracks, surface marks and historic repairs consistent with its age. One of the natural shrinkage cracks has a small raised section where the wood has lifted slightly over time, adding to the authentic character of the piece. The table is structurally sound and ready for everyday use.
