Antique French Oak Storage Bench / Blanket Chest, 1800–1850
This antique French storage bench dates from the first half of the 19th century, circa 1800–1850. Made from solid oak, it combines a traditional wooden chest with an upholstered seat.
The bench features a hinged wooden lid, upholstered in natural jute fabric with traditional straw filling. The upholstery has a rustic appearance, with visible stitching, wear and irregularities that reflect its age and use.
The solid oak construction features recessed panels on all four sides, rounded corners and a simple moulded base. The wood has developed a warm, dark patina over time, with variations in colour and traces of previous use.
Lifting the hinged seat reveals a spacious storage compartment, originally intended for household textiles, blankets or other belongings.
With its practical dimensions, the bench can be used in a hallway, bedroom or living room, providing both seating and storage. It also works well as a blanket chest at the foot of a bed.
