Antique French Rustic Terracotta Wash Trough, Auvergne, 19th Century

Antique French terracotta wash trough dating from the 19th century and originating from the Auvergne region of France.

The trough is handmade from terracotta and has a simple rounded form with a thick rolled rim. Horizontal marks from the making process are still clearly visible around the outside.

The terracotta has a dark, weathered surface with lighter areas, mineral deposits and traces of many years of use, giving it a particularly rustic appearance.

At the bottom is a drainage opening with an old wooden plug. There is some loss to the terracotta around this opening, as shown in the photographs.

The trough is in good antique condition and, importantly, has no cracks. There are scratches, marks, surface wear and other irregularities consistent with its age and original use.

Originally a practical household object, it now makes an unusual decorative piece and could also be used as a planter or garden vessel.
