Set of 6 Fischel Bentwood Bistro Chairs, Czechoslovakia, circa 1930–1950

Set of six Fischel bentwood bistro chairs, made in Czechoslovakia and dating from circa 1930–1950.

The chairs are made from beechwood using the bentwood technique for which Fischel was known. Each chair has a round wooden seat and a tall curved backrest with four slender turned spindles. Curved supports connect the seat and back, while a circular bentwood stretcher strengthens the legs.

The chairs were acquired as Fischel chairs. Traces on the wood indicate where paper labels were once attached, although the labels themselves are no longer present. The design and construction are consistent with Fischel bentwood furniture from this period.

The beechwood has developed a warm colour and natural patina over the years. There are differences in tone between the chairs, together with scratches, marks and surface wear from age and use.

All six chairs are in good vintage condition. They form a well-matched set, although small differences in colour, wear and finish can be seen between the individual chairs. Please see the photographs for their overall condition.

A classic set of Central European bentwood chairs, originally designed as practical café and bistro seating and equally suitable today around a kitchen or dining table.
