French Art Deco Bistro Table with Rex Bakelite Top – c.1930–1940
This French bistro table dates from the Art Deco period, circa 1930–1940. It features a painted iron tripod base and retains its original Rex bakelite top.
The iron base has a distinctive three-legged design with stepped decorative details characteristic of the Art Deco period. The original Rex bakelite top has a marbled pink finish with darker pink and red tones, giving the table its classic French café appearance. The underside of the top is marked Rex.
The table is sturdy and suitable for everyday use. The original Rex bakelite top has an old repaired crack. It also shows age-related wear, including scratches, surface marks and several worn and discoloured areas consistent with decades of use. The painted iron base has developed a light patina with minor wear, adding to the table’s authentic character.
The design is reminiscent of café tables produced by Berc Antoine, Paris during the Art Deco period. However, the table is not marked by the maker, and we are unable to provide conclusive evidence attributing it to that manufacturer.
Suitable as a bistro table, wine table, side table or occasional table.
